Traceroutes and server errors..

March 5th, 2009

Now available on all accounts is additional info about why a monitor shows downtime – for example was it a timeout, a 404 or 500 error etc. This info is collected when we scan your server and then included in alerts we send you but now is also available on the site – on monitor view pages and on the overview page you will see a little info icon Info next to any downtimes listed there. You can mouseover this icon to see the error message and click it to see further info if available. Also on the monitor list page any time a monitor is down and shows the red error icon Offline you can also mouseover and click that icon for the error details.

Also now available for “big biz” type accounts are traceroutes which can be performed any time a server is found to be down – to enable this feature just check the “TraceRoute Snapshot?” box on the monitor create or edit form (only available on certain types of monitors such as ping). Traceroutes can then be viewed, as the following image shows, by clicking on the info icons as described above.

Traceroute Example

We hope all this additional monitoring data will help you diagnose server or network problems and ultimately enable you provide a more reliable service to your own users.

If you have any questions or suggestions – please let us know! :)

Handy Icons

March 4th, 2009

Another day another nifty feature added to ServerMojo!

Today we added dynamic status icons to go along with the page refresh. What this means is that a small icon appears next to the url in your browser and also in the tab (assuming you use a browser with tabs) where servermojo is open. So, when your server or monitor is online it will show a green icon online in the tab and when it goes offline it will change to a red icon offline so you can see at a glance when any of your monitors change status while you are online without having to actually go to the servermojo page! Handy Harry!

The status icons show on individual monitor pages, the overview page and the monitor list page and the refresh interval depends on the scan interval you define for your monitors.

More niftyness to follow! :)

New Sub-Accounts Feature

March 3rd, 2009

We just released a new sub-accounts feature (for premium accounts) which you will see when you login to your account.

Sub-accounts allow you to create read-only (for now) accounts for others such as employees or clients to use. They can login and view stats for monitors associated with that sub-account. Alerts can be sent to contacts from multiple sub-accounts so you can give multiple users access to alerts and stats for any monitor. In future we plan to add even more abilities to these sub-accounts.

As always we welcome feedback so let us know what you think about this new feature or any others in the new ServerMojo.

New ServerMojo Alerts

February 23rd, 2009

Following on from the recent roll-out of the shiny new ServerMojo v2, we have just added another new feature! Well its really an upgrade to an existing feature but either way its neat..

Alerts now include more information about the downtime we detected – for example did it timeout or was it a 500 ‘internal server error’ or a 404 or whatever else we came across when scanning your server or page. These more detailed alerts allow you to instantly make a more informed decision on what action (if any) needs to be taken to rectify the problem or reason for the alert.

We’ll also be adding some related functions soon to further increase the value of alerts and the diagnostic usefulness of ServerMojo.

ServerMojo v2

February 8th, 2009

The all new ServerMojo v2 is now online and running! :)

This new version is a complete and total rewrite of the entire system with more features, more monitor types, more account types, more alerts formats, cool new interface, even cooler charts and overall a fancy new environmentally friendly design (well its fairly green at least!).

If you were an existing ServerMojo user then your account has been imported and all your monitors should be running fine now.

If you had a free account before then it remains free now however you need to perform certain actions on the site to ‘recharge’ your account – actions include logging in and viewing your monitors and stats occasionally. Another action to keep your account active is to send us feedback on the new system – anything you like or don’t like about it? Found a bug? Any features you would like to see added? Also testimonials that we can publish on the site would be great! Feel free to send us any constructive criticism – if you think something sucks then we want to know so we can fix it! For extra bonus points – blog or twitter about how cool ServerMojo is now.. ;)

If you had a premium account in the old system then your account remains premium in the new system and is now converted to a ‘Small Biz’ account but the monthly fee for existing premiums remains unchanged.

Features in this new version include:

  • New monitor types such as http with authentication (can login to your site to check status), generic port monitor (enter an address and any port number and it will check for a response there), RegEx test – this monitor extracts and stores data from your page and is a premium feature.
  • Other monitor types that also existed in the old system include ping, dns, mysql, http, http + keyword.
  • Bigger, better and rather snazzy charts showing response time and either uptime or downtime along with hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly statistics.
  • Monitoring is done from multiple geographically separated nodes and statistics show average global response times.
  • Alert types now including Email, IM (Jabber), Twitter, SMS and even RSS feeds.
  • Handy monitor overview page showing details and current status of all monitors in your account so you can get an instant look at your entire system health. This page refreshes automatically so you can just leave it open and whenever a server status changes you can see it easily.
  • Monitor frequency can be up to every minute depending on account type.
  • Traceroutes are performed immediately on server down and results are stored for later analysis – a premium feature.
  • Finally of course there is the whole new site design with much improved interface to manage your account and monitors.

We’re hopeful that once you’ve had some time to experience the awesomeness of the new ServerMojo you will consider upgrading to one of the premium packages and if you are not yet a ServerMojo user then do your servers a favour and please try a 100% free trial to one of our premium account packages – there’s no commitment or obligation and no billing details are collected so our trials are risk free. :)

Remember – red is bad! (unless you are a ManUtd fan or drive a Ferrari.)

Coming Soon..

January 5th, 2009

servermojo

There’s not long to wait now before this cool new environmentally friendly (well it’s green at least!) servermojo is launched so keep an eye out!

It’s that time of year..

November 7th, 2008

For a new blog post! ;)

Yes it has been a rather low volume blog here at servermojo but we’ll try to post more often now…

We are actually working on a bunch of new features which will be revealed in the coming weeks so stay tuned for that.

Also you may (or may not!) have noticed that our scans have been faster/more reliable recently – we made some changes to improve the mechanism overall and fixed a couple of minor bugs.

We also updated the twitter alerts system not so long ago to use their api instead of the old IM/Jabber method which they seem to have given up on for now. It should be much more reliable now but let us know if you experience any problems with that.

Lastly – apologies to those of you who commented here before but didnt see your comments appear.. we sort of forgot to check the moderation queue and just found 153 comments waiting! Sadly 148 of those were spam.. but the few that were real should at least now be visible – better late than never! ;)

New stuff

December 4th, 2007

We recently completed moving servermojo to new servers and in the process added some new features and improved others..

Creating multiple monitors under a single account is now easier.

Alerts can now also be sent to any jabber account such as GTalk so now you can get alerts by email, sms, our private im system (based on jabber), any public jabber network and of course, twitter! All types are free except for SMS.

A pause function to pause scanning across ALL monitors under your account.. handy of you have many and dont want to stop them all one at a time.

We also upgraded the backend systems to make it even more efficient and scalable.

More handy features will be added soon also to ensure ServerMojo is the best FREE server monitoring system around! :)
